In order to make Katahdin ME before it closes in Mid October, a person needs to average somewhere between 11-13 miles per day. This mileage may vary depending on a number of reasons. Before you get your hiking legs you may fall short. On easier terrain you may far exceed the average. Either way it sometimes feels like a grind. We’re trying to maintain perspective and not miss the many subtleties that can slip by when in the “zone.”
Rock Spring Hut had a dazzling view, especially at night with Shenandoah Valley lights far below. The daytime view does not disappoint.
Great pictures! As a kid, my aunt and uncle had a cabin near Harpers Ferry. They would take my sister and I to the Shenandoah River Valley, armed with spoons, to dig for bullets from the civil war era. Great memories, however, looking back it was probably illegal to dig in the park.
Enjoy the journey.
